(NewsSpace.com) – Each year, drivers cause millions of car accidents in the United States. Tens of thousands of people die because of the wrecks. In California, one elderly woman and her daughter are lucky to be alive after a day out went woefully wrong.
On Friday, November 17, a 70-year-old woman and her 40-year-old daughter were driving in a San Mateo, California, neighborhood, just after 7 a.m., when the driver lost control of a Tesla X while heading down a steep embankment. Witnesses say it came to a stop, then rapidly accelerated, causing a series of events that sound like something out of an action movie.
According to a San Mateo Police Department public information officer, the Tesla hit a curb first, then proceeded to run through a driveway, a backyard, and a fence between two properties. Then, for up to 50 feet, it flew into the air and over a swimming pool before crashing into a home. The impact took out the home’s exterior wall, and the car came to a stop inside the kitchen.
Neither passenger inside the vehicle was injured. When questioned, the 70-year-old woman admitted that she had not driven in approximately a year and was not familiar with the mechanisms of the Tesla. However, at the time, it was not in self-driving mode.
One of the area residents, Sean Carmichael, described the accident as like an earthquake and noticed that there were two destroyed cars left in its wake. He hoped the city would put in speed bumps following the incident.
Fortunately, there was nobody inside the home at the time. The owner’s daughter, Meredith Donato, said her mother was out when the accident occurred, and if she had been home, she’d have been in the kitchen drinking her morning tea. According to PEOPLE, Donato said there was “obviously property damage, but at the end of the day, it’s just stuff.”
Police are still investigating the accident, but nobody has been arrested. Authorities also said there was no indication anyone was under the influence.
