(NewsSpace.com) – Since President Joe Biden took office in 2021, millions of migrants have poured across the southern border, setting off a firestorm of tensions between the administration and border states. Fed up with lackadaisical border control policies, Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) took matters into his own hands. Not only has he shipped more than 100,000 migrants out of the Lone Star State to so-called sanctuary cities, he’s also created his own barrier to prevent immigrants from crossing into Texas. That barrier has been the subject of several court battles, and now a recent Supreme Court ruling has many calling for the state’s independence.
Over the past few months, Texas has erected a razor-wire fence along its shared border with Mexico to keep migrants out. Federal officials directed Abbott to remove the barrier, but he has staunchly refused. The Biden Administration had sued, claiming the barrier was obstructing Border Patrol duties. After a lower court ruled in favor of Texas, the matter went before the Supreme Court. Justices ruled 5-4 that federal officials can remove parts of it. The decision has angered many.
Following the ruling, #Texit, a nod to Brexit suggesting Texas should secede from the United States, went viral on X, formerly Twitter. It’s not just Texans making the suggestion, either. Lawmakers are jumping on board as well. Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) said the state should ignore the ruling completely, and Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA) said “Texas should hold its ground,” as the “Feds are staging a Civil War.” The Texas Nationalist Movement called upon Abbott to “call an immediate special session to explore [the state’s] independence.”
The idea of Texas becoming independent isn’t new; it’s been discussed numerous times. However, secession isn’t really an option as much as many people may call for it. A ruling in an old case from 1869, Texas v. White, made it impossible for individual states to decide unilaterally to secede.
