(NewsSpace.com) – There’s an ongoing battle between conservative lawmakers and the federal government with regard to the southern border. The GOP is constantly attacking President Joe Biden’s immigration policies, which have record-breaking numbers of illegal immigrants crossing the US-Mexico border. Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) took matters into his own hands, deploying his state’s National Guard to help with the precarious situation. Other states have done the same, and now Florida is sending more.
Currently, there are 90 Florida officers at the border, having been deployed previously. Now, the Sunshine State’s governor, Ron DeSantis (R), has ordered the deployment of an additional 1,000 National Guard members based on Texas’ needs.
On Thursday, February 1, DeSantis posted a speech he gave on X, formerly Twitter, where he said that “states have every right to defend their sovereignty.” A statement on the governor’s office website said he was offering his “efforts to stop the invasion at the southern border.”
It’s not just DeSantis who is supporting Abbott, either. Several other Republican governors—from at least 14 states—have stood by Texas and volunteered to send their National Guardsmen and other resources to help secure the border.
The battle between the Biden administration and Texas has been ongoing for more than a year now. Abbott launched Operation Lone Star to help deal with the influx of migrants that he said the federal government was ignoring. More than 100,000 migrants have been shipped to sanctuary cities across the country. Abbott also directed the Texas National Guard to erect razor wire at the major crossing points, a battle that actually landed before the Supreme Court.
Though the nation’s highest court ruled that federal agents can remove the wire, that hasn’t stopped Texas from continuing its mission. Officials vowed to continue erecting the barrier if it’s removed, something that the Supreme Court hasn’t prohibited.
