(NewsSpace.com) – Lately, there’s been a lot of talk about the increasing threat Russia poses to the world. Many believe that he won’t stop with Ukraine and that he only views the neighboring country as a stepping stone to greater things. One congressman, however, recently sounded the alarm and called on the Biden Administration to declassify what he deemed pertinent information.
Turner Demands Declassification
On Wednesday, February 14, Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH), who chairs the House Intelligence Committee, emailed the House, saying the committee “identified an urgent matter” involving “a destabilizing foreign military capability.” He went on to say the information “should be known by all Congressional policymakers.” After he notified the House, he also went public with the information, though he kept references intentionally vague.
Turner acknowledged that the Intelligence Committee had access to some of the information, but he wants President Joe Biden to “declassify all information relating to this threat” so lawmakers and “allies can openly discuss” how to respond and neutralize the threat. He said he made the ambiguous statement to prevent the administration from “sleepwalking into an international crisis.”
What Is the “Threat?”
Turner didn’t reveal what the threat was because it’s considered sensitive information, but there’s speculation that it involves a Russian space weapon, potentially a nuclear weapon, that has the potential to disrupt and jam satellites for potentially long periods of time.
Following Turner’s statement, Biden addressed the issue and sought to placate the public, saying there was “no nuclear threat” to the US or the Earth in general. He also said, “There’s no evidence.” Russia has made plans to move forward with plans to disrupt the satellites. Others agreed with Biden, including House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Rep. Jim Hines (D-CT), who also sits on the intelligence committee as its top Democrat.
National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan spoke out as well, saying he was surprised that Turner had made any information public, especially since he was expected to meet with him the day after the statement was released. John Kirby, a National Security Council spokesman, said the government has been closely monitoring the situation and that there is no threat to actual human beings. He noted that Biden had ordered a series of actions, which is what Turner wanted in the first place.
Congress will likely be briefed on the issue, and there are plans for the US to diplomatically engage with Russia.
