(NewsSpace.com) – When Tupac Shakur died in 1996, it sent shockwaves through the music community. For decades, authorities failed to charge anyone with his murder, despite allegedly having information that could have resulted in an arrest. That changed in October 2023, when law enforcement arrested Duane Davis, who had published a book with details about the rapper’s death. He was arraigned last year and has been sitting in jail since, but recently made a court appearance.
On Tuesday, February 20, Davis appeared in Clark County District Court before Judge Carli Kierny, seeking a delay in the trial. His original trial was slated to start in June, but Davis’ new attorney, Carl Arnold, needs more time to go through the materials. Additionally, the prosecution is still providing evidence to the defense team. Judge Kierny agreed to move the trial from June 3 to November 4.
Davis could appear in court again within the next few weeks as well. Currently, he’s sitting in jail on a $750,000 bail. He needs to pay 10% of that to secure a bond that would allow him to be released to house arrest. However, the court has to hold a “source hearing,” one that would be held to ascertain whether the money being paid to release Davis has been legally obtained. The suspect says, so far, the media circus has prevented his family from helping him because they don’t want the exposure.
The suspect is reported to be the only surviving person who was in the vehicle where the gunshots were fired at Shakur and Marion “Suge” Knight, who was injured in the shooting that killed the famous rapper. The prosecution has to prove that not only was Davis in Las Vegas but that he was involved in the shooting. Davis’ book and previous media interviews could help.
Davis has been charged with first-degree murder, to which he has pleaded not guilty. He faces life in prison if he’s found guilty.
