(NewsSpace.com) – Playwrights have a tough job. They have to take books or stories and turn them into an entire production. Some are extremely skilled at doing so, which earns them a place in the industry. Christopher Durang was one such artist. Sadly, he has now passed away at the age of 75.
The news of Durang’s death broke shortly after he passed away on the evening of Tuesday, April 2, at his Pipersville, Pennsylvania, home. His agent, Patrick Herold, said the playwright died of complications stemming from logopenic primary progressive aphasia, a rare form of dementia. He was diagnosed with the condition in 2016.
As the disease progresses, it results in increased trouble in thinking of the right words to say and eventually, slows down speech. Someone who is diagnosed with the condition only lives an average of 7 to 12 years after the onset of symptoms. Durang only went public with the disease in 2022. He continued to write—at a slower pace—for years after his diagnosis.
The playwright was born in 1949 to Francis and Patricia Durang, an architect and secretary, respectively. He has his mother to thank for his introduction to the theater because she took him to Paper Mill Playhouse several times a year. To say he was inspired would be an understatement. He wrote his first play at age 8, which was produced at his elementary school. Then, he co-wrote two others in his school years that went on to become productions as well.
Durang’s work, which spanned more than 40 years, was full of cultural references. He was well-known for his satirical wit, combining comedy and drama in works that grabbed hold of the audience’s attention and held it. Durang also didn’t stick to one theme, like many do. He explored different topics and subjects, such as sex, psychology, serial killers, and metaphysics. He had many hits during his career, including “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” which won him his only Tony Award for best play in 2013, “Laughing Wild,” and “The Marriage of Bette and Boo,” which is considered an autobiographical comedy.
The playwright also appeared in plays he wrote, in addition to some movies and television shows.
