Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys Is Placed Under Conservatorship

(NewsSpace.com) – The Beach Boys were wildly popular in the 1960s, crooning songs like “Surfing USA,” “Surfing Safari,” and “Kokomo.” Most of the band is still alive today. However, one of its co-founders, singer and chief songwriter Brian Wilson, has long been plagued by health issues. A judge recently ruled that the musician be placed under a conservatorship.

On Thursday, May 9, Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles Judge Gus May approved a petition filed back in February. It sought to put Wilson under the care of his publicist and manager, Jean Sievers, and his business manager, LeeAnn Hard. The petition noted that Wilson, who has long admitted to suffering from a schizoaffective disorder and depression, was “unable to properly provide for his own personal needs for physical health.”

The petition notes that Wilson also lacks the mental capacity to make his own medical decisions. His doctor testified that the singer is taking Aricept for dementia and has difficulty following directions, with the exception of physical therapy and music lessons. Judge May said there was evidence the musician approved of the arrangement. The conservatorship only applies to his medical and personal affairs, not his financial assets.

His publicist and business manager sought to fill the role left by his wife, who died in January. Prior to her death, she cared for all of Wilson’s medical needs and handled estate matters. His children have asked to be “added to the text chain from his nurses providing updates” and that the conservators consult with them “regarding all material health care decisions,” something May agreed to.

Nothing about Wilson’s daily life will change. According to a statement on his website, the musician and his children, who remain at home, will continue to enjoy their current living situation with “no extreme changes.” They will be cared for by the same team that has been in place for years.
