(NewsSpace.com) – Presumptive nominees President Joe Biden and 45th POTUS Donald Trump are hitting the campaign trail hard, with just months to go until the US decides its new leader. Ahead of the first debate between the two parties, which took place on June 27, many politicians had already thrown their backing behind one of the candidates. A former GOP representative decided to endorse Biden instead of his party’s choice.
Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) made his position clear on Trump following the January 6 riots on Capitol Hill. He was part of the House investigative committee into the event, along with former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY). He took a job as a commentator on CNN after leaving Congress. During a recent appearance on the network, Kinzinger said he’s endorsing Biden for president this year, despite being “a proud conservative.”
The former lawmaker said he couldn’t, in good conscience, toss his vote to Trump simply because he’s the party’s presumptive choice. He didn’t wrestle much with the decision, either, saying he “didn’t have to look in the mirror and look into [his] soul or anything like that.” He blames Trump for creating a “culture of just anger and division.”
Biden thanked Kinzinger for his endorsement in a video response posted on X, formerly Twitter. He noted, “This is what putting your country before your party looks like.”
Kinzinger’s endorsement is a testament to the fact that not all Republicans are looking to throw their weight behind Trump. Biden’s campaign has been striving to reach the more moderate GOP supporters, the ones that threw their support behind former US Ambassador Nikki Haley. It’s already launched video ads showing how the former president continually attacked Haley and her supporters in hopes of drawing them to his side come November. Haley withdrew from the primary in March but later threw her support behind Trump.
