(NewsSpace.com) – Presidential candidates rely on fundraising to help fund their campaigns. One means of raising money is through regular and super political-action committees (PACs) that work directly or indirectly to boost a candidate. These committees receive money from donors to operate. A recent report indicated that SpaceX and X CEO Elon Musk planned to be a rather large contributor from now until the election.
On Tuesday, July 16, The Wall Street Journal published an exclusive report stating that sources close to the matter revealed that Musk plans to contribute $45 million per month to a superPAC backing former President Donald Trump. The news came after Musk publicly endorsed Trump, following an attempt on his life on Saturday, July 13. The CEO is currently the richest person in the world.
America PAC, which was formed in June, is focused on pushing people to vote early and to request mail-in ballots in an effort to counteract President Joe Biden’s campaign. The backers of the committee include Joe Lonsdale, of Palantir Technologies, Kelly Craft, a former US ambassador; the Winklevoss twins; and Joe Craft, Alliance Resource Partners chief executive. Lonsdale donated $1 million, while the Winklevoss twins donated $250,000.
After The Wall Street Journal published its report, Musk responded to it on X, formerly Twitter, with a meme titled “FAKE GNUS,” a play on the words “fake news,” commonly uttered by the former president. Reuters even reported that the committee has nowhere near that much money in its coffers, only having raised just over $8 million, according to a recent filing. Musk is not listed among the contributors in that report.
Musk has made no secret of his disdain for the left wing policies that made him switch from voting for Barack Obama to throwing his support behind Trump. Musk, himself, has been controversial in recent years, particularly in how he’s governing his social media platform and promoting right-wing policies.
