Olympic Runner’s Life Hangs in Balance After Shocking Attack
In a disturbing incident that has sent shockwaves through the international sports community, Ugandan Olympic marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei is fighting for her life after being doused with gasoline and set ablaze, allegedly by her former boyfriend. The attack occurred at Cheptegei’s home in Endebess, western Kenya, where she was training following her recent participation in the Paris Olympics.
Cheptegei, 33, sustained burns to 80 percent of her body and is currently in critical condition at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret. The severity of her injuries has prompted medical professionals to keep her fully sedated. The alleged attacker, identified as Dickson Ndiema, also suffered burns to 30 percent of his body during the altercation and is being treated at the same hospital.

Details of the Attack Emerge
According to local authorities, the couple was heard quarreling outside their house before the attack. Trans-Nzoia County police commander Jeremiah Ole Kosiom provided chilling details of the incident:
“The couple were heard quarrelling outside their house. During the altercation, the boyfriend was seen pouring a liquid on the woman before burning her,” Mr Kosiom was quoted as saying.
Neighbors intervened to rescue Cheptegei, but not before she had suffered extensive injuries. Police have collected evidence from the scene, including a five-liter jerrican and a burned mobile phone, for forensic analysis.
Rising Concerns Over Athlete Safety
This attack has brought to the forefront the alarming issue of violence against athletes, particularly female athletes, in Kenya. Recent years have seen several high-profile cases, including the murders of runners Damaris Mutua and Agnes Tirop, both allegedly at the hands of their partners. Even male athletes have not been spared, as evidenced by the stabbing death of Ugandan athlete Benjamin Kiplagat in Eldoret last December.
These incidents have sparked protests in Kenya and other African nations against femicides and gender-based violence. The sporting community is now calling for enhanced safety measures and support systems for athletes, both during their active careers and in their personal lives.
A Promising Career in Jeopardy
Cheptegei’s athletic achievements make this tragedy all the more poignant. She finished 44th in the marathon at the recent Paris Olympics and claimed gold at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in 2022. Her father, Joseph Cheptegei, is now seeking justice for his daughter, whose promising career hangs in the balance.
As the investigation continues and the global athletic community rallies around Cheptegei, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by athletes and the urgent need for comprehensive safety measures to protect them both on and off the field.
