Americans Predict Future Election-Related Violence, Says Poll

(NewsSpace.com) – The 2020 presidential election was one for the history books. In the aftermath, there was a riot at Capitol Hill, and several people faced federal charges for perpetrating violence and acting as fake electors. According to a recent survey, it seems Americans expect more of the same in the future.

A recent CBS/YouGov poll asked more than 2,000 United States residents about the events of January 6, 2021, and other questions surrounding US democracy. While the majority, 51%, expect that future losses will be accepted peacefully, 49% believe there will be violence, much like there was in the months following the 2020 election. Also, 61% of respondents mainly believe that President Joe Biden was the rightful winner of that election.

A whopping 78% of those surveyed disapprove of the actions of the people who forced their way into the Capitol on that fateful day, yet the approval rate among Republicans, particularly among the MAGA faction, has risen. However, 53% believe the actions of those people represented insurrection, while 33% believe it was an act of patriotism.

Additionally, the poll asked about the intent of law enforcement agencies. Of the respondents, 39% believed law enforcement that day was trying to stop the protest, while 15% believed they were there to encourage it.

In the aftermath of January 6, more than 1,000 people were arrested. Former President Donald Trump has suggested that he would pardon those involved, and 38% of those surveyed agreed with the idea of pardons. When considering just Republicans, that figure rose to 66%.

The survey also asked respondents if Trump’s name should remain on the ballot in the wake of the legal troubles he’s facing. The results varied widely by party, with 81% of Democrats saying his name should be taken off, while only 44% of Independents and 10% of Republicans believed the same.

When asked if democracy in the US today is secure or in danger, an overwhelming majority, 70%, believe it’s being threatened.
