A Shift in Holiday Preferences
A recent survey conducted by St Pierre Bakery involving 2,000 American adults has revealed a significant shift in Christmas traditions. The results indicate that many Americans are ready to break away from conventional holiday practices, with a notable 31% expressing openness to replacing the traditional turkey dinner with more unconventional options like burgers, tacos, or pizza.
This trend towards non-traditional meals is already taking hold, with 60% of respondents reporting that they have tried alternative Christmas dinners. Among these, pizza (37%), pasta (31%), and burgers (28%) have emerged as popular choices. The survey also found that 44% would prefer pizza, 38% tacos, and 34% Chinese takeout over the traditional turkey feast.
Comfort and Quality Time Take Center Stage
The survey reveals a growing emphasis on comfort and quality time during the holiday season. A striking 47% of respondents expressed a preference for spending Christmas Day in pajamas rather than dressing up. This shift towards a more relaxed celebration is further underscored by the 35% who prioritize quality time with loved ones over elaborate gifts or decorations.
“While Christmas is a season of joy, many people find themselves feeling a little stuck in the same festive routine, and traditions that once felt magical can start to feel repetitive,” said a spokesperson for St Pierre Bakery.
This desire for change extends beyond just the Christmas meal. The survey indicates that 69% of Americans are interested in creating new festive traditions. Some are even considering more radical departures from convention, with 18% expressing interest in a “friends-only” Christmas celebration.
The Rise of Experiential Gifting
The survey also highlights a significant shift in gift-giving preferences. An overwhelming 79% of respondents favor gifts that provide an experience rather than material items. This trend is particularly evident in the growing popularity of food-related gifts, with nearly 70% of adults aged 35 and over planning to gift food this holiday season.
“Food uniquely delivers both the excitement of receiving a gift and the lasting memories of sharing an amazing meal with loved ones,” said Nate Rempe, Omaha Steaks President and CEO.
This shift towards experiential and food-based gifting is rooted in cherished memories. The survey found that 76% of consumers associate their fondest childhood holiday memories with food-related experiences. This nostalgic connection to food is driving a trend towards gifts that create lasting memories rather than temporary material pleasures.
Embracing Change While Honoring Tradition
While there’s a clear appetite for change, the survey also reveals that many Americans feel conflicted about breaking with tradition. Over two-thirds of respondents reported feeling compelled to stick to traditional practices, and 49% believe others are hesitant to change. This tension between the desire for innovation and the pull of tradition highlights the complex emotions surrounding holiday celebrations.
The spokesperson for St Pierre Bakery had this to say: “It’s not about losing the holiday spirit—it’s about refreshing it. We think it’s time to shake things up and make the holiday season exciting again—because traditions evolve, and so should our celebrations. From the endless turkey dinners to the familiar carols, some families are craving a fresh twist on Christmas. Food plays such a huge role in making festive memories—why not embrace some new traditions to reignite the holiday spirit and make new ‘magnifique’ moments for generations to come?”
As Americans continue to navigate these changing holiday preferences, it’s clear that the focus is shifting towards creating meaningful, personalized celebrations that honor the spirit of the season while embracing new ways to connect and create lasting memories.
