(NewsSpace.com) – The Israel-Hamas war has had far-reaching effects across the globe. In the United States, multiple protests have popped up on college campuses, leading to police involvement, arrests, and consequences for students participating. Yet, there’s another issue. Democrats are seemingly worried that these protests will have an effect at the polls come November.
Columbia University in New York is considered Ground Zero for the protests, repeating history dating back to the Vietnam War protests of 1968. During that event, students took over some of the university’s buildings, not unlike what is happening today in the pro-Palestinian demonstrations. The NYPD has been to the site multiple times, in riot gear, and hundreds of people have been arrested.
It’s not just in New York, either. College campuses in Florida, California, Arizona, Virginia, North Carolina, and Utah have also seen outbursts of demonstrations, which are reportedly becoming increasingly violent. That has led to Democrats fearing that come election time, it will hurt the party, and turn the tables toward former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee.
One House Democrat, who spoke to Axios on condition of anonymity, said that the protests are likely to have a significant impact on elections. “The longer they continue, and the worse that they get, the worse it’s going to be for the election overall,” they said, because it’s “bringing out [the public’s] most conservative side.”
According to Rep. Annie Kuster (D-NH), who chairs the New Democrat Coalition, the Left, including President Joe Biden, has been holding back on weighing in on the protests. Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown (D) refused to discuss the politics of the protests, though his office made it clear there is no room for “antisemitism or hatred” in the US.
Like the abortion issue is looming over Republicans’ heads, the Democrats are heading into a very close presidential race with the Gaza issue looming over theirs.
