Freed Israeli Hostage Suing A US Nonprofit Connected To His Hamas Captor

(NewsSpace.com) – When Hamas launched its surprise attack on Israel on October 7, the militant group not only killed more than 1,200 people, it also took around 250 hostages. Many of those hostages are still being held, but the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have managed to rescue some of them. One of those hostages has decided to sue a US-based nonprofit for its ties to Hamas.

On Saturday, June 8, the IDF managed to rescue four people held by Hamas in Central Gaza. One of those was 22-year-old Almog Meir Jan, whose father sadly passed away from a suspected heart attack the day before his rescue. Jan was held in Abdallah Aljamal’s home. Aljamal, who was killed in the rescue mission, was a spokesman for the Hamas labor ministry. He was also a contributor to the Palestine Chronicle website, run by People Media Project, a tax-exempt group in the US.

Jan is now suing the People Media Project for its alleged role in helping to spread propaganda. In the lawsuit, which was filed on Tuesday, July 9, in Washington state’s western district court, the former hostage accused the publication of having “employed Hamas Operative Aljamal and offered him its U.S. platform to write and disseminate Hamas propaganda.”

During the time Jan was held hostage, he claims the nonprofit allowed his captor “to use [the] platform to whitewash Hamas’s crimes and attract international support for its terrorist cause,” and as a result, “aided, abetted, and materially supported” Hamas and Aljamal for nearly 250 days, which is a violation of international law.

Following Jan’s rescue, Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) called on the Biden Administration and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to take action to remove tax-exempt status from the People Media Project in order to ensure that no US taxpayer dollars are going toward the funding of terrorism, in Gaza, or anywhere else.
