GOP Senator Accuses The Biden Administration Of “Covert Mass Amnesty”

(NewsSpace.com) – The border crisis has been out of control for years now. Republicans have continually called for more action from the Biden administration. In early June, the New York Post revealed that the government closed more than 350,000 removal proceedings and asylum cases, effectively terminating their cases without making a decision either way. The problem with that is that it removes the migrants from the US legal system and does away with mandated check-ins. One US senator has called on the Biden administration to stop engaging in what he calls “mass amnesty.”

On Tuesday, June 4, Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas condemning his department for allegedly “circumventing its duty to enforce immigration laws” in its decision to “gran[t] de facto amnesty to hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants.” Hawley cited the Post’s report and called the termination of the cases “an unparalleled abuse.” He accused Mayorkas of allowing migrants to remain in the country indefinitely simply because their immigration cases went unheard.

Doing so, Hawley says, “poses grave threats to the safety and security of the American people.” He points to one such instance of a Venezuelan migrant whose case was closed in early May. That migrant is now accused of shooting two NYPD officers. The senator also mentions Jose Ibarra, the accused murderer of Laken Riley, whom he says the government “illegally paroled into the” US.

In closing his letter, Hawley asks Mayorkas to answer a few questions regarding migrant encounters. First, he asks what the Department of Homeland Security doing to track those cases it closed, and how many have submitted applications for visas, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), or Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Finally, he wants to know how many of the migrants who had their cases closed went on to commit crimes in the country.
