Here’s What To Know About Recently Elected President Of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum

(NewsSpace.com) – Mexico recently elected its first-ever female president. In the landmark election that featured two female candidates, Claudia Sheinbaum, a member of the ruling party Morena, managed to secure at least 58% of the vote, beating out Xóchitl Gálvez and Jorge Álvarez Máynez, who had at least 26.6% and 9.9%, respectively. Let’s take a deeper look into who she is.

Sheinbaum is widely known to be President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s (AMLO) protégé. However, she doesn’t plan to remain in his shadow. Where AMLO is an oilman whose investments in environmentally questionable projects raised eyebrows, Sheinbaum is a climate scientist. It’s likely her approach to these matters will be significantly different.

However, some critics say AMLO will be pulling the punches behind the scenes and Sheinbaum is just a puppet. In a morning press conference, the current Mexican leader said he has no intentions to “influence anything” and Sheinbaum “Is the one empowered to make all the decisions.”

There’s no doubt that Sheinbaum will be tasked with addressing many of the country’s issues, including migration through the nation, cartel violence that is responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths and kidnappings over the past few decades, and Mexico’s oil company threatening to collapse under a mountain of debt. In a country known for its violence and impunity, she has promised to continue AMLO’s policy of combating crime at its root and said she wants to establish a national criminal investigations program.

Sheinbaum is known for being demanding and expecting people to do their jobs. One former member of her cabinet said her ways have “gotten results.” Yet, she’s often viewed as reserved and aloof, never boasting about her achievements, but instead focusing on the tasks at hand. That’s in stark contrast to AMLO’s very present personality.

Following her win, President Joe Biden issued a statement congratulating Sheinbaum for her win. He said he “look[s] forward to working closely” with her “in the spirit of partnership and friendship.”
