(NewsSpace.com) – Former President Donald Trump has been facing multiple legal woes. He recently went to court in a defamation case brought against him by E. Jean Carroll, a former columnist he was found guilty of defaming last year. After a jury awarded Carroll an astonishing $83 million, it looks like Trump’s lead attorney in the case, Alina Habba, has been replaced.
Trump plans to appeal the decision issued by the jury in the Carroll case, but it seems like Habba won’t be at the defense table when it happens. The former president took to Truth Social, his social media platform, on Wednesday, January 31. In a long-winded post, he said he and his team are “interviewing various law firms to represent [him] in an Appeal” of the decision, which he says is a “HOAX” and the result of “the most ridiculous and unfair Witch Hunts our Country has ever seen.”
It’s not clear why Habba is on the chopping block, but some speculate that it might have something to do with her performance in court, where she stumbled quite a bit and needed correction from Judge Lewis Kaplan. In one instance, she tried to refer to documents that hadn’t been entered into evidence. Kaplan also admonished the attorney for raising “dubious value” objections, refusing to listen to sustained objections, and for trying to read tweets that he told her were not admissible. One day in court, he admonished her a total of 14 times, even asking if she needed a refresher on acceptable practices.
However, as Newsweek notes, hiring a new attorney for an appeal isn’t uncommon because it’s an entirely different process. Trump’s team hasn’t come out and said Habba has been fired or removed from the legal team, either. It’s possible he moved her to another case, but with neither party commenting on the move, it’s anybody’s guess.
