(NewsSpace.com) – For months, Republicans and Democrats alike have called President Joe Biden’s capabilities into question. Many feared he was not fit to serve another four years in office and wouldn’t be able to win against former President Donald Trump. In the face of a disastrous debate and a press conference where he still seemed a bit dazed, Biden finally announced that he would step down and let the party choose another nominee. Now, his second-in-command is ready to step up to the plate.
On Sunday, Biden posted on X, formerly Twitter, notifying the public—on his terms—that he was no longer going to run in November. He said that choosing Kamala Harris as his running mate in 2020 was “the best decision” and fully endorsed her. In a response two hours later on X, Harris said it was an honor to have his backing and that her “intention is to earn and win [the] nomination.” Many top Democrats immediately rallied around her, and others gave their support in the days following the announcement.
Donations immediately poured in, with a record-breaking $81 million in donations in the 24 hours after Biden said he was dropping out. Harris currently has a large campaign chest of more than $150 million. She may be able to take the coffers of the Biden-Harris campaign, too, but the GOP is likely to challenge that. If she’s nominated, she’s likely to run an aggressive campaign, as there’s little time between the Democratic National Convention and the election.
As far as the polls show, Harris trails behind Trump by an average margin of 1.5%, which is slightly better than Biden’s 1.9%. Her approval rating as of July 23, 38.3%, is also lower than that of Trump’s, 41.8%, by a margin of just 3.5%. Polls show this will also likely be a very close race if Harris is indeed chosen as the Democratic Party nominee.
