Legal Professionals Urge British Prime Minister to Halt Military Shipments to Israel

(NewsSpace.com) – The Israel-Hamas war has been ongoing since the militant group launched its surprise attack on October 7, killing more than 1,100 people. The conflict shows no signs of abating. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is determined to eradicate Hamas, and in his quest to do so, he has put Rafah in his crosshairs. The problem is, that’s the last place Palestinians have to escape the violence, and the West is cautioning Israel not to move forward with its plans. In Britain, legal experts are urging the government to suspend military shipments to the Middle Eastern country.

After Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) opened fire on a clearly marked convoy containing aid workers, killing seven, including three Britons, legal experts have called for the government to hit Israel where it hurts. More than 800 judges, lawyers, and legal experts signed a 17-page letter, dated Wednesday, April 3, demanding the government suspend arms sales to the Jewish state. They cite multiple reasons, including a “plausible risk of genocide in Gaza,” a potential IDF assault on Rafah, and the increasing risk of famine among Palestinians.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, while still supportive of Israel’s right to defend itself, has since taken a harsher approach to his criticism of the country’s conduct in the past few weeks. Even members of Parliament have expressed similar concerns and wishes.

However, getting him to suspend arms sales might be more difficult than just making the decision to do so. Sunak spoke with “The Sun,” a London publication, acknowledging that there is pressure, but also “a set of rules, regulations, and procedures that [the British Government will] always follow.”

The country has since demanded an investigation into the aid worker’s deaths and lodged a formal objection through its ambassador. The government has also called on Israel, and Netanyahu, to allow more humanitarian aid to make its way into Gaza without any more lethal attacks.
