US Immigration Arrests Are On The Decline

(NewsSpace.com) – For most of President Joe Biden’s tenure, the border crisis has raged out of control. Millions of migrants have poured into the interior of the US, seeking a better way of life. Yet, it seems those encounters—and immigration arrests—have significantly decreased and there are a number of reasons why.

On Monday, July 15, Customs and Border Protection released its monthly update. In June, reports indicate that the agency apprehended just over 83,500 migrants. This is the lowest figure throughout the entire duration of Biden’s presidency. In fact, encounters are down by 55% as a whole and that is thanks to the executive order the president signed back in early June to stem the flow of migrants into the country.

In Texas, one of the hardest-hit states, figures dropped by 32%, from 45,139 encounters in May to 30,771 in June. Like the national figures, the Texas numbers represented the slowest flow into the country since January 2021, when Biden took office. San Diego, which has held the highest rate of encounters, has also declined by 60%.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) credits the decline to a dual-track approach that saw an increase in new options for migrants to come to the US legally and additional enforcement measures. One senior official with the CBP said it’s a “culmination of a yearslong effort to build up both of these things,” and now it is paying off. The official also said that this has been in motion for years and that the White House, including Vice President Kamala Harris, has been directly involved with crafting the avenues.

In the meantime, DHS has removed tens of thousands of migrants from 125 different countries in recent weeks. That has involved 200 repatriation flights across the globe. The number of migrants that have been released into the US while waiting for their deportation hearings has also declined significantly—70%—in recent weeks.
